I saw Tolkien grudgingly after still wiping the bad taste off my mouth from Rebel. I’m not the greatest Lord of the Rings fan but I was quite impressed that the movie managed to cover so much depth and history of the author’s fascinating life, all the while still balancing the tragedy, romance and historical aspects of the script. The film covers Tolkien’s obsession with language and linguistics, the tragic early death of his mother, his early poverty, his camaraderies at University, falling in love with his future wife and and the horrors of the Great War. Hoult and Lily Collins playing his wife give exceptional performances with the one of the most touching romantic scenes in film history (imho) coming towards the end.
