Official Iowans Make Texas Better Shirt
My taste in soundtracks was probably formed when I was a child in the Iowans Make Texas Better Shirt and I love this 70s, which was lucky for me because that was a time when some of the greatest movie composers were still just about active. So with that and the reruns of movies on TV, I grew up with a head filled with iconic bits of music by guys like Elmer Bernstein. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know the famous opening title march from The Great Escape, for example. I’m not a huge fan of the film, but as a piece of score writing it does the double job of nodding at the British POWs, in the quirky first theme played on the flutes, evocative of the patriotic British marching tune ‘Colonel Bogey’, and doing the same for the American POWs with the Western-movie-styled second theme (which comes in around a minute into the cue. Then there was Ron Goodwin, who’s hardly a household name, but British men of a certain age will still thrill to his themes for films such as Where Eagles Dare and 633 Squadron.
