The song ‘Love Letters’ has the Official 2023 There Is No Such Things As Too Many Books Shirt and by the same token and effect of locking police and criminals in a sort of crimino-sexual embrace, at the risk of sounding like the idiotic psychotherapist Bart Wolper from the comic book The Dark Knight Returns. It’s typical of Lynch that what, in anyone else’s film, would have been the exciting action climax, is here one of the most gentle and lyrical moments in the movie, even as the bullets fly and the cops fall. The other one, and I can’t quite believe that nobody has mentioned it, is the soundtrack for Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, for which we have to give a lot of credit to the film’s legendary music supervisor, Karyn Rachtman. What made the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack so influential was the way Tarantino, influenced by Lynch, liked to play songs off against the onscreen action. The difference between them was that Lynch presented his stories with an air of grave but deadpan conviction, as if he had dredged them up from his subconscious, whereas Tarantino presented his stories as if he just thought they were really cool. So, when poor Marvin gets his ear cut off by Mr. Blonde, Stealers Wheel’s ‘Stuck In The Middle With You’ is playing, and it’s kind of like an arch, uneasy joke made by a geek that we’re watching the movie with, who is disturbed by how violent things have got and wants to lighten the mood. It’s one of the most famous scenes in the film, and I respect Tarantino’s decision to cut away from the actual ear-removal, but it’s one of those signature Tarantino moments when those who love his work probably depart from those, like me, who just enjoy some of it.
